Tenzing Hillary Airport is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous airports in the world due to its short runway and challenging terrain. The runway is only 527 meters (1,729 feet) long and 20 meters (66 feet) wide. This leaves little margin for error, making it one of the most thrilling experiences for travelers.

The airport was named after the two first summiteers of the world’s highest peak Mount Everest (8,848.86 meters) in 1953 AD. Due to the difficult weather condition, flight to and from Lukla is often delayed or cancelled, especially during the monsoon.

A 30 to 45-minute flight approximately from Kathmandu takes you to the lap of the mountains, where cold breeze will give you chills. During peak trekking seasons like autumn and spring you cannot fly directly from Kathmandu due to certain circumstances, you have to fly from Ramechap, where you have to travel from Kathmandu to Ramechap during night time to catch the flight to Lukla. Flights usually take off during early mornings, then it continues till there is any disturbance in weather. High standards have been set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) to assist pilots overcome the challenges of a successful landing. Only seasoned pilots with at least 100 short take-off and landing (STOL) flying hours are eligible to use these requirements. The pilots also need to have flown ten times into Lukla under the guidance of an approved instructor.  

You are allowed to take 15 kg of weight in total, 10 kg of luggage, and 5 kg of hand carry. You can manage this ratio by yourself as well, for instance, if your luggage weights 12 kg and your hand carries weights 3kg then it is acceptable, that a person is allowed to carry 15 kg of weight in total.
