Overview

A trek to unreal wilderness adventure of lifetime: welcome to Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek. An off-the-beaten path, secluded, and isolated from the mainstream trekking routes and hordes of tourists, the trek is one of the most beautiful hiking adventures in Nepal. The trek covers the far eastern part of Nepal and revolves around the world’s third highest mountain Kanchenjunga 8,568m.

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp trekking trail passes through the beautiful Arun Valley and the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area which covers an area of 2035 sq.km. The trek offers you a wide range of wonderful scenery from lush, tropical jungle through to rhododendron forests, low river valley, glacial moraine, rocky scree slopes and to the unique lifestyle and culture of diverse ethnic groups like the Limbus, the Sherpas and the Tibetans.

As this trekking is in restricted area you need a local guide and at least two trekkers and must have permits.

Itinerary

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport one of our company representative picks you up and transfer you to the hotel.

Free day in Kathmandu. Rechecking your documents and luggages.

Catch the early morning flight to Bhadrapur. Then drive to Taplejung by bus.

We start our hike to Mitlung from Taplejung Bazar. The trail goes through rice paddies, terraced farm fields, and cardamon farms.

After having breakfast, we start our trek walking uphill and downhill along the Tamor river to Sinuwa, a village of Limbu and Tamang ethnicity. After lunch we continue our walk to Chiruwa.

Trekking through the Limbu, Rai, Tamang, and Sherpa villages we move alongside Tamor river and climbs a spur before descending to the Simbua Khola. We follow the trail taken by Dalai Lama when he fled from Tibet in 1959.

Today we walk alongside Ghunsa Khola which is set in a steep sided and narrow valley. Today’s walking is on exposed terrain with steep uphill. After lunch, there is a steep climb up to the small and friendly Tibetan settlement of Amjilosa, where we will camp for the night.

Today will be an easy day as we will walk through rhododendron and bamboo forests. After lunch, we will start our ascent to our final destination of the day, Gyabla.

Leaving behind the beautiful Gyabla village, today we head for not only the largest but also the last village in the valley, Ghunsa.

Ghunsa is a perfect place for a rest. We take a short hike to the opposite side of Ghunsa Khola with a gain of about 400m. The rest of the day can be spent relaxing and exploring the lively Tibetan village of Ghunsa.

From Ghunsa we begin our trek walking through a forest of thorny shrubs, juniper and birch trees along the south bank of Ghunsa khola. We will also have to cross several scree slopes and some glacial moraine before we drop down to Khambachen.

Today we follow the trail on the left side of Kanchenjunga Glacier, hiking along a high plateau to reach the campsite of Lhonak. From there we can see the stunning panoramic view of massive mountain peaks like Wegde Peak (6802m), Mera Peak (6364m), Nepal Peak (7177m), Twins (7350m), and many others.

We start our trek early morning to reach and explore Kanchenjunga north basecamp area. There you will get panoramic views of Kirant Chuli, Nepal Peak, Kanchenjunga, Yalung, Twins, Kambachem, Chang Himal and more. After enjoying the views, we return to the camp via the same route.

Today we retrace our footsteps back to Ghunsa.

We trek along a steep rocky trail through a forested area filled with birch, pine, and colorful rhododendron to reach High Camp for overnight stay.

Today will be a bit difficult day as we have to cross over three passes to reach Cheram. The view from the passes is rewarding. We see Yalung Glacier, Jannu (7710m), Makalu (8481m), Baruntse (7129m), Kanchenjunga (8586m), and many other mountain ranges along the Sikkim border followed by the walk along ridges with a final descent to Tseram.

Passing the moraines of Yalung Glacier into an ablation valley, we head towards Ramche for overnight stay.

This is another beautiful exploration day. We cross the Oktang glacier, giving panoramic views of Kanchenjunga and Mount Jannu amongst others. We then return back to Ramche.

We start to descend from today. It is an easy trail along Simbua Khola through varieties of pine and rhododendron forests, descending all the way to Tortong.

The trail drops steeply to the Imja Khola then crossing Lasiya Bhanjyang (3310m) and Dhupi Bhanjyang (2620m), we descend towards Yamphudim. The village has a mixed community of Sherpas, Rais, Limbus, and Gurungs.

We descend from Yamphudin to the Kabele Khola and climb to Phumpe for overnight stay.

Today as we trek through forests, waterfalls, stairs, we will then cross the Phewa khola, and climb steeply to Simbu.

Finally, today is the last day of your trek. We will take shortcuts and follow roads to reach Taplejung.

After having breakfast, we will take a private/public transportation to reach Illam which is Nepal’s most popular tea state. On the way you will have wonderful mountain views.

From Illam we will take a 2-3 hours drive to Badrapur and catch our flight to Kathmandu. Upon reaching Kathmandu take your time to relax and rest and at evening we will have a farewell dinner.

Today you will be transferred to the international airport approximately three hours before your scheduled flight by one of our representatives. It may be the departure day but we will be in touch with you from time to time.

I am Vegan, what extra things should I pack for the trek?


If you are a vegan, it is strongly recommended to bring additional protein bars or snacks for the trek. The cost of snacks in the trekking trail will be expensive, so prepare accordingly.
