About Bhutan Tour - Happiness is a Place
Bhutan is a small Himalayan kingdom of about 780,000 people, never colonised, and the world’s only country with Vajrayana Buddhism as its state religion. Its people have lived in close harmony with nature for centuries, and the Buddhist respect for all sentient beings has helped protect its pristine forests and wildlife.
Buddhism reached Bhutan in the 7th and 8th centuries, carried by Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava). In 1616, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal arrived from Tibet, unified the country and built the dzongs that still govern each valley today. In 1907, Ugyen Wangchuck was elected the first hereditary King. In 2008, Bhutan held its first democratic elections and crowned its fifth King, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.
