The baggage allowance for Lukla Flight in 2026 is 15kg (33 lbs) in total, meaning – your duffel bag and your daypack should be 15kg in total. So, if your baggage weight is more than 15 kg like 16 kg, then you will need to pay the additional weight charge of that 1kg which is just a USD 1 to USD 2 dollar per kg.

Now, if you follow this guide, I will tell you – how you can reduce a lot of weight so that you can carry more for the trek. But first we need to know the most important thing, which is “what things to pack in duffel bags and what to carry in your daypack so that your bag will pass the luggage check and makes your trek easier.”
Weight Split in Duffel Bag and Day Pack for EBC Trek:
Usually, trekkers split weight like this: 10 kg of weight goes to duffel bag and 5 kg weight goes to your backpack. The reason behind splitting 10kg weight and 5kg weight is for your own safety as well as porter safety in Everest Base Camp Trek.
How?
In trekking area like Everest Base Camp, one porter is provided for two trekkers (clients) which means one porter carries around 20 to 25 kg of weight in the whole trek.

So, if you try to increase their weight, it will affect them and if you increase your daypack weight then it can affect your trekking experience. So, to make sure that trekkers and porters are both happy, 10 kg and 5kg is split in duffel bag and day pack.
Now, don’t worry about our strong porters, because porters are from the Everest region and 20kg weight is like a daily routine exercise for them.
Also, Porters will be always ahead of you, waiting for you in the next teahouse.
So, one question will come in mind now. What if I need something from the duffel bag during the trek?
The easy answer is, do not put items or gears in duffel bags that you will use it frequently during the trek. Put those essential items in your daypack like: power banks, charger, sunscreen, snacks, passports, permits, cash, windproof jacket, raincover, sun hat, buff, sunglass, headlamp, sanitizer, and so on.
Once the weight is split between duffel bag and daypack like this, you are now ready for the next tip which is how to reduce the weight of your baggage.
Tip to Reduce Weight for Baggage Allowance for Everest Base Camp

With this tip, you will reduce a lot of weight in the baggage and save those extra weight charge in the airport.
The number one tip is:
Wear your trekking gear:
Yup, you are going for the trek so you need to wear the full trekking gears from the first day. You need to wear the heavy trekking boots, thick fleece, down jacket, trekking pants before checking the weight. You can later take off your down jacket. Now, why it is also important to wear those heavy gears from first round?
Because once you land in Lukla, the weather will be very cold up to 10 to 15°C in day. So, it’s the best way to reduce weight, and ready for the trek.
Stuff your Cargo pockets
Now, you are wearing the full trekking gears which means you have a lot of pockets now. Lots of pockets means lots of space that you can put. Now, don’t go on putting small clothes in there. Just stuff it wil chargers, power banks, small accessories and so on. This might reduce 1 to 2 kg of weight.
Store non-essential luggage in Kathmandu
The non-essential items and luggage should be left behind in Kathmandu hotel. If you don’t know, it is the only way to make sure your luggage are safe when you return from the trek. This costs nothing in most of the hotels so complete the trek without worrying anything.
Now, I already covered the most important topics in the guide. So, these other two topics is for beginners who are trekking first time in Nepal.
What to Pack for the Everest Base Camp Trek

Checking all the packing lists for Everest Base Camp is a smart move but do you know how many pieces is enough for the trek? One trekking Pants? Two Trekking Pants or Three?
Yea it’s confusing because it depends on how many times you change your clothes during the trek. So, basically up to Dingboche, you get to take hot shower either by free of charge or with some money based on location. When you take shower, you will change your clothes so does that means you need 5 pieces of changing clothes each?
That’s a big No, because you get the laundry services in the EBC trek too. Surprising right?
Here are the Packing list items for Everest Base Camp Trek now:
- 3 Thermal Tops (Merino Wool or Synthetic) – This are the piece of clothes that you will change mostly after trek because they are light, dry quickly and absorbs sweat.
- 2 or 3 Thermal Bottoms – Same like tops, the thermal bottoms work same. They are light, dry quickly and absorb sweat.
Basically, thermal base layers are the one that you can change daily after shower. Add 4-5 pairs of quick dry underwear and 2 T-shirts if you want and that’s all for the most important packing list items.
Now after the base layer, the packing lists include mid-layer clothing whose job is to trap body heat so that you can stay warm.
- 1 Fleece Jacket: Fleece Jacket are lightweight and good for trekking but they are not waterproof. You don’t need to change the fleece jacket daily which is why one is enough.
- 2 Trekking Pants: Here, I recommend you to bring zip-off convertible pants because they work in changing temperatures. You can put them in laundry and wear again for 2-3 days straight again.
Now, after these second layer, you need to pack the third outer layer and you only need to bring 1 piece each for Everest Base Camp trek.
- Heavy Down jacket – Mandatory for the trek and can be rented too in Kathmandu Thamel. Just remember that renting means you are asking for a worn out Down jackets and it might look ugly sometime.
- 1 Windproof Shell jacket: Now, these are waterproof and windproof and you only need one.
- 1 raincoat
So, outer layers are only worn when you feel sudden change in the temperature – which is why they do not get dirty easily. Easy to remember right!
As for other essential gears you need to bring for EBC trek is:
- 1 Trekking Boots
- 1 Camp Shoe
- Socks – 5 Pairs is enough. Throw them in Laundry to clean it.
- 1 Headwear (Cap/Sunhat)
- 2 Buff (Neck Gaiter) – Mandatory when trekking or else you will get “Khumbu Cough”
- Gloves – Should be waterproof and windproof.
- Sleeping Bag – Mandatory and it can be rented in Thamel. Buy Liner for extra warmth and to stay clean. Tea House will provide Blankets too.
- Adjustable Trekking Poles (Should be in Duffel bag)

- Water Bottle
- First Aid Kit (Company Provide it that includes – water purifier, medicine for diarrhea, headache, AMS, Blisters and so on).
