Where is Kalapathar located?
Kalapathar is located near Pumori Himal (Nepal: Tibet border), which is above Gorakshep with an altitude of 5,643m (18,514 ft). Situated in the Mahalangur Himalaya section, 10.6 km far from Mt Everest in south ridge of Pumori, it lies in the Khumbu region.
According to Nepalese people, Kalapathar means “Black Rock” and the name was given due to its coloration. You can reach its summit from Gorakshep within 1.5-2 hours and 3-4 hours from Lobuche. How to reach Kalapathar of Everest?
After coming to Lukla, you have to do a short trek in Namche Bazar via Phakding. There, you will have an astounding view of Mt Everest from Namche Bazar also. And after having a rest day in Namche Bazar, you will have to trek to Tyangboche the next day. Here, you can see the oldest monastery of Nepal and the history of it.
Similarly, crossing the Fungi Thanga you will reach Dingboche where you have to take an acclimatization day. Acclimatization is very important for your body to adjust the surrounding.
Lobuche will be your next destination after a rest day in Dingboche; then finally you will have to trek to Gorakshep in next day and then you will hike to Kalapathar.
This itinerary consists of a minimum of 11 days to reach Kalapathar; only if you are a beginner. If you can do rapid base camp trekking then you can do Kalapathar trekking within 8-9. However, there’s no short route or vehicle in this trekking. Therefore, trekking is the only way to reach Kalapathar.
If you don’t want to do trekking then you can reach there by Helicopter ride. It will be a little costly though.
Weather in Kalapathar of Everest
Weather can be unpredictable in this area because Global warming has also affected here. In 2019, even in starting of peak season there was some rash weather which affected the delay of flights. However, the best month to do trekking in Kalapathar is in the Autumn season which falls under Sep-Dec and Spring season which falls under March-June.
