We are thrilled to announce that it is in a talk that from January 1st, 2025 all sightseeing tours in the Everest region including all commercial flights will be banned.
The Sagarmatha National Park, which includes Mt Everest, issued a circular advising all helicopter operators that commercial flights are no longer permitted in the national park. Not only commercial flights but helicopters are also banned from transporting cargo above Pangboche at 3,985 meters above sea level.
Why is commercial helicopter flight banned in the Everest region?
Sushma Rana, senior conservation officer of the park states that “We are taking this unpopular decision to provide justice to wildlife. However, the rule will not be applied to emergency rescues flights in the region.”
The uncontrolled and unsystematic commercial flights in the Everest region have caused risks to the safety if the wild life. In addition to causing significant noise pollution in the park’s towns and intermediate areas, helicopter flights may also be the source of criminal activity, wildlife-related activities, and poaching.
The helicopter flight ban in Everest region is a major concern for people who can’t come down back to Lukla walking back to a long camp. Walking back down a minimum of 8 hours a day is a challenge for some people.
