Why Langtang Valley & Gosainkunda Trek?
Langtang Valley & Holy Gosainkund trekking offers an awesome panorama of mountains from massive Ganesh Himal (7,405 m) Langtang Lirung (7,234 m) Ghengu Liru(Langtang II 6571m / 21,560ft), Kimshun (6,745m/22,137ft) and Shalbachum(6,918m / 22,699ft) to the south. It includes Chimsedang Lekh at the ridge of peaks includes Naya-Kanga (5,846m) and Gangchempo, Tilman’s beautiful Fluted Peak, Jugal Himal, terminating at Dorje Lakpa (6,980m/22,929ft). Views of Manaslu and Annapurna Himalaya can be seen also on this fabulous trekking.
How to get to your destination?
Langtang Valley & Holy Gosainkund trekking begins with an exciting overland journey. The driving begins through farm villages and towns to reach higher Himalayan alpine areas at Dhunche town-1,960 m high. It is the place where Nepal’s 2nd largest Langtang National Park starts, the first Park around Himalaya established in 1976 with an area of 1,710 sq. km.
After an interesting drive ends at Syabrubesi village we then walk uphill to reach a beautiful Langtang valley at Kynajin Gompa at 3,870 m. We will then trek into a River Gorge for few days passing nice areas of Lama-Hotel-Ghodetabela and Langtang village (which was totally destroyed by avalanches from the earthquake of 25th April and 12th May 2015 and slowly coming back to normal life and shapes).
At Kyanjin Gompa within Langtang Valley, we will enjoy the awesome scenery of mountains and then head back on the same route. After traveling for a few days in the same route we will continue our next adventure towards Holy Gosainkund. Our second part of the trek leads to nice villages of Upper or Thulo Syabru. It lies towards our highlight at holy Gosainkunda. There is a glacial pond of religious significant regarded as sacred by both Hindu and Buddhists, pilgrims travel to take holy bath in this icy cold water as belief is that it relinquishes a sin of hundred lifetimes.
Finally, our marvelous adventure concludes with a scenic interesting walk near the Helambu area of eastern Langtang. There we will reach a viewpoint hill at Chisapani village. Then we will have stunning sunrise over a chain of Himalayan peaks, and downhill to North East of Kathmandu. Then we will have a rim at Sundarijal with a short drive back to Kathmandu.

On arrival in Kathmandu received by Pristine Nepal staff and guide for a short drive to your hotel at Thamel the hub of Kathmandu city where many hotels, restaurants, trekking gear shops, stores, bars, cafes, souvenir shops, art gallery, travel agencies are located. Our guide or group leader will brief with information regarding Upper Mustang trekking, hotels, culture with do’s and don’ts.
Our wonderful journey to Langtang valley & Holy Gosainkund trekking starts with a morning drive towards high hills of Langtang to Syabrubesi, an exciting drive leading past many farm village and towns to reach warm areas at Trisuli Bazaar. After a short break drive heads towards cooler area at Ramche and Dhunche town at 1,960 m, at the entrance of Langtang National Park Dhunche a major town of Rasuwa district and Langtang region. From here drive leads downhill on the zig-zag winding road to end the journey for the day at Syabrubesi village for a first overnight stop in Langtang area.
Beginning our first day walk with a climb for few hours heading towards scattered farm areas and villages, walking continues near Riverside and Bamboo place with few tea houses and lodges. After a refreshing break, our walk continues into the cool forest of rhododendron, oaks and pines trees entering a gorge following Langtang River, feeding from the glacier of Langtang peaks, then completing the day walk at Lama Hotel for an overnight stop.
After a pleasant overnight with the sound of the river flowing, morning walk starts heading uphill through a gorge of dense forest, then reaching a nice spot at Ghodetabela (horse stable), from here altitude gains slowly and air gets cooler. After lunch break walk continues to Langtang village for an overnight stop as the walk leads past woodland and then coming into a wider area at Langtang village, a nice moderate size village of Tamang and Bhatia’s tribe peoples. (This village was completely destroyed by an avalanche of 25th April and 12th May 2015 huge earthquakes).
Today on the trail and first highlight of the adventure, as the morning trek leads to Kyanjin Gompa at Langtang valley, walking follows with short steep up as tree lines drops for short bushes of rhododendron, juniper, and prickly Burberry bushes.
Our walk slowly enters a wide beautiful glacial valley with views of high snow-capped mountains on both sides of the valley, after a scenic and nice morning walk reaching Kyanjin Gompa for an overnight stop. Kyanjin located at picturesque Langtang valley with wide green meadows actually a summer pasture and grazing land for Yaks.
This lovely spot offers views of Langtang Lirung glacier and icefall at close distance, Kyanjin named after an old Gompa (monastery) at present in near ruins perched on a rocky moraine ridge top, at Kyanjin visit Yak Cheese Factory with the help and support of Swiss technical assistance.
A perfect spot for acclimatization at Kyanjin, a necessary rest day before heading towards high areas to Gosainkund and above East Laurabina-La pass, here take a short hike on the top of Kyanjin Ri at 4,773m for better views. Or climb to Tsergo Ri 4,984m with quite steep slopes offering a fantastic panorama of surrounding mountains. You need at least 3 to 4 hours to climb up to Tsergo Ri. So if you climbed this one it will be bit long day as well.
From Kyanjin hills and Tsergo-Ri top super views of Chimsedang Lekh, and Kangjal Himal with a ridge of peaks bordering the valley to the south, Naya Kanga 5,844m. stunning views of the great mountains flanking the Langtang valley, including Ganchenpo 6,387m, Dorje Lakpa 6,990 m, Pemthang Karpo Ri 6,830m, Langtang Lirung 7,245m and across the northern boundary in Tibet rises the huge massive Shishapangma 8,046 m the last worlds 14th highest mountain located wholly in Tibet.
After a pleasant and exciting overnight and rest day at Kyanjin and beautiful Langtang valley, morning walk leading to a long descent to Lama Hotel passing via Langtang village and Ghoretabla following Langtang Khola and back at Lama Hotel for an overnight stop.
From Lama Hotel, morning walk follows downhill to Bamboo a small place with few tea houses serving as a lodge. After a nice short rest continues to walk past farm terraces of millets, corns and wheat’s (depending on season for crops), on leaving farm area with uphill to Upper/Thulo Syabru for overnight stop, an interesting Tamang village, where houses are linked together on a row with an old monastery above the village. This village also was worse effected from 2015 earthquake.
Today a short scenic walk heading higher area as the walk leads into a deep forest of rhododendron, pines, and hemlocks trees with excellent views of Ganesh Himal, Manaslu Mountains with Langtang Lirung, after hours of climb reaching a level path. A pleasant walk leads to Shing Gompa for an overnight stop, this village also called Chandanbari with nice lodges and a small cheese factory with an old monastery on top of the village.
From here head to our second part of the adventure at Gosainkund and beyond to Kathmandu, the walk continues with a slow climb into alpine woodland reaching higher towards Lauri Binayak West pass at 3,932 m after walking through Cholang Pati and Lauri Binayak.
After a nice walk along with grand views of Ganesh Himal and Langtang Lirung reaching at holy Gosaikund for an overnight stop.
The story and belief of Gosainkund as per ancient Hindu, a vicarage of Lord Shiva (one of three Hindu main gods) believes that this pristine small lake and pond was made by digging with a Trisul (a holy Trident) weapon of Lord Shiva and formed a pond to dilute the poison that he took to save the world.
Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims from India and Nepal visit Gosainkund on full moon day, every year in the month of August, on the auspicious time of ‘Janai Purnima’ festival which is held around holy places of Nepal and India, where Hindu change their holy threads.
After an exciting and interesting stop at holy Gosainkund, today a tough day of this adventure, as the walk leads to a climb over East Laurabina or Gosainkund pass to cross 4,610 m on the highest spot of this adventure.
From the top ridge, along descend to Phedi (bottom) at 3,730 m and then continue walking with few short up and down to Gopte Odar for an overnight stop near Helambu area and on route to Kathmandu. This is a small place located in the middle of juniper, rhododendron and pines forest.
Morning walk leads into the forest with short climb reaching a high ridge at Thadepati of 3,690 meters high spot, where Helambu and Kathmandu trail joins at this point. This high point offers fantastic views of snow-peaks and of rolling hills and valley, this scenic place with about 5-6 lodges and teahouses. After a nice stop enjoying views walk downhill Kutumsang village for an overnight stop, a lovely village of Hyalmo people very similar to Tamang and Sherpa tribe with the same culture and the religion.
From this nice scenic hill our walk leads closer to Kathmandu valley high ridges of Chisapani, morning starts with short downhill through farmlands and villages into the forest to reach a nice neat village of Patibanjayang, from here climb for an hour to Chisapani for last overnight stop on the high hills of Langtang area. Nowadays, there are roads almost all around this area. But it has still its old trekking trail. Chisapani village with nice good lodges, located on a ridge around beautiful surrounding which is the closest hill of Kathmandu valley on route to Langtang, Helambu, and Nagarkot, offering sunrise and sunset views over an array of peaks.
The morning after catching beautiful sunrise views over a range of mountains, last day walk of this adventure on downhill through pristine forest and farmlands, passing through farm villages around Burlang and Chepu Bhanjyang with views of Kathmandu Valley. Our last day walk continues on the downhill path to Sundarijal (means beautiful water) a beautiful and peaceful spot with forest surrounding and freshwater streams.
From here an hour downhill to reach Sundarijal at the road head where our adventurous trek concludes with a short drive back to Kathmandu, after a fabulous time around high Langtang mountain and valley, on reaching the hotel afternoon free for individual activities and shopping.
