So, where is Annapurna Mountain Located?

Annapurna Mountain is located in north-central Nepal surrounded by Kali Gandaki Gorge on the west, the Marsangdi river on the north and east, and Pokhara city on the south.

The Annapurna massif mountains range includes one peak of over 8,000 meters, thirteen peaks over 7,000 meters, and more than sixteen peaks over 6,000 meters.

According to myth, Mount Annapurna was named after the Hindu goddess named “Annapurna” – “who symbolizes food and nourishment” – believed to resides there. Basically, the word “Annapurna” is derived from the Sanskrit language where “anna” means “food” or “everlasting food” and “purna” means “filled”.

Mount Annapurna is also known to be the tenth highest mountain in the world i.e. Annapurna I is the highest peak of this massif which is 8,091 meters above sea level.

Including Annapurna I there are other six well-known peaks in the Annapurna massif mountains too which are over 7,200m (23,620ft) above the sea level.

Records of Climbing expeditions of Annapurna Mountain

On 3rd June 1950, Annapurna I was first climbed by Maurice Herzog, Louis Lachenal, Lionel Terray, Marcel Ichac, Jean Couzy, Marcel Schatz, Jacques Oudot, Francis de Noyelle, of the French Annapurna Expedition led by Herzog which was 8,000m (26,200ft).

Similarly, in 1970 south face of Annapurna was first climbed by Whillans and Dougal Haston without using supplementary oxygen.

In 1978 a team lead by Arlene Blum of the American Woman’s Himalayan Expedition became the first United States to climb Annapurna I.

On 15 October 178 at 3:30 pm Vera Komarkova, Irene Miller and Sherpas Mingma Tsering, and Chewag Ringjing became the first summit team to climb Annapurna I.

In October 2007 the first solo ascent of the south face Annapurna was made by Slovenian climber Tomaž Humar.

On the main and highest part of the face, Swiss climber Ueli Steck made a third attempt on 8th and 9th October 2013 and made one of the most impressive Himalayan climbs in history.

Other Peaks of Annapurna Massif Mountains:

Mt. Gangapurna was first climbed by a German expedition lead by Günther Hauser, via the East Ridge on 6th May 1965.

Annapurna South (Annapurna Dakshin or Moditse) was climbed by a Japanese expedition in 1964. The team comprised of S. Uyeo and Mingma Tsering.

Hiunchuli was climbed by an expedition led by U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer Craig Anderson in 1971.

Mt. Machhapurchhre was climbed by Wilfrid Noyce and A. D. M. Cox in 1957. Similarly, Mt. Machhapurchhe is also known as a mount fish-tail. Mt. Machhapuchhre and Hiunchuli are gates to the Annapurna Sanctuary which leads to the South face of Annapurna I. Also, these two peaks are prominently visible from the valley called Pokhara. 

Trekking in Annapurna Base Camp:

ABC is one of the most famous trekking regions among trekkers covering an area (7,692 km²). There are other three major trekking routes in the Annapurna region which are:

  1. The Jomsom Trek to Jomson and Muktinath,
  2. The Annapurna Sanctuary route to Annapurna base camp and
  3. The Annapurna Circuit (circles the Annapurna Himal itself and includes the Jomsom route).

The queen of cities in Nepal named Pokhara usually serves trekkers as a starting point for these treks as well as other short treks too.
