This area is popular for high Himalaya lakes which are mostly related with Hindu & Buddhist mythology. There are 108 lakes around this area with small to medium in size. Gosainkund Lake is one of the most popular lakes in this area which is over 4,300m above the sea level. The Gosaikunda area has been delineated as a religious site. Hindu myth attributes Gosaikunda as the abode of the Hindu deities Shiva and his wife Gauri. The Hindu scriptures Bhagwat Purana, Bishnu Purana and the epics Mahabharat & Ramayana refer to Samundra Mathan(Ocean shake), which is directly related to the origin of Gosaikunda. Its waters are considered holy and of particular significance during the Janai Purnima (Full Moon in August) festivals when thousands of pilgrims from Nepal and India visit the area. Gosaikunda is believed to have been created by Lord Shiva when he thrust his Trishul (Trident) into a mountain to extract water so that he could cool his stinging throat after he had swallowed poison. He had swallowed poison to protect undying (Immortal) syrup from the devil. It is believed that Lord Shiva had realized freshness after drinking this water. So Hindu pilgrimage tries to climb here to have a shower.
