Dolpo region is a high altitude and culturally Tibetan region arbitrarily divided into a Lower (Outer) and Upper (Inner) region. Phoksundo and Mugu Karnali valley lies in the northwest and the sixth highest mountain in the world Mt. Dhaulagiri (8172m) lies in the southwest of this region.
This region was opened up for tourism only in 1989. Dolpo is one of the Restricted Areas of Nepal and trekkers require a Trekking Permit from the Department of Immigration in addition to the TIMS card to trek in this region. Also, trekkers must be extremely fit to do this trek.
